Globe Thistle, Echinops

Echinops bannaticus
HOW TO GROW GLOBE THISTLE

Sow seeds in greenhouse in late winter, or direct sow in garden beds after threat of frost. Seeds require light to germinate, so sow seeds on the surface of the soil, and press in lightly. Grows best in well drained soils, even in gravel. Plants will re-seed easily if the spiky blooms aren’t harvested or deadheaded. In zones 3-8, the plants will perennialize. Prune stems/blooms back to the ground before new growth the following spring. Plants can be divided every 3-4 years in spring or early fall for new plantings. Globe thistle is drought tolerant, so will only need regular watering while new plants are getting established. Hardiness zones 3-8. Perennial.

Planting Depth surface requires light
Soil Temp. Germ. 65-70
Days to Germ. 14-21
Plant Spacing 18”
Row Spacing 12-24”
Full Sun, Moist Well Drained Soil

Idyllwild Conventional Seed grower since 2018
Idyllwild was born of our joyful curiosity and celebration of nature’s diverse gifts. Following nature’s model of open dispersal and dissemination, we share these seeds with you and invite you to play in the garden of abundance. We learn from nature and she has taught us to live and think in terms of “abundance” instead of “scarcity”. Diversity - in all forms, from genetic to creative expression - is the heart of resilience. We enjoy experimenting with myriads of flavors, colors, and textures and the world opens to us in infinite possibilities. As a result, we are nourished in body, mind, and spirit.
