The garden or table beet originated in the Mediterranean region in southwestern Asia and was introduced to Europe in the Middle Ages. Leafy varieties of beets such as Swiss chard and sea beets date to 1st century BC. The first description of garden beets with fleshy edible roots are from Germany in the 16th century. There is speculation that the early form of the crop was a winter annual and through selection for a food plant that could be stored through the winter the beet developed an enlarged storage root and became a biennial.
There are also sugar beets grown for their sugar content and fodder beets called mangels grown for their nutritional tops and root which are used as animal fodder. Both types not sold here. All of the above beets types are sexually compatible and will readily cross when flowering near one another. Delicious beet recipes.
