For home gardeners, shelling dried beans by hand seems to take forever. Now you can do an hour's worth of shelling in a few minutes. Introducing the Drill Bean Sheller, a.k.a. Whack–O-Matic Bean Sheller by Restoration Seeds. Just eight links of chain from your local hardware store attached to a paint stir for your drill and your in business. Double the chain up in a loop to create enough mass to do the job. Use a screw quick-link to securely attach the chain to the paint stir.
Fill a five gallon bucket about 30–40 percent with dried bean pods. Run the drill at moderate speed tilting from side-to-side. Avoid bogging the drill down and pushing it to the bottom of the bucket to prevent nicking the beans. Shell dried beans only, this process will damage fresh beans. Wear protective eyewear and keep your hands out of the bucket while it is operating.
