HOW TO GROW SPILANTHES OLERACEA

Start indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost, transplant out after last frost. Frost tender from zone 9, grown in temperate climates as an annual. Plant in pots to bring indoors to expend season. In tropical conditions can spread 3’ and grow to 2’ tall. Will stay much smaller in temperate climates. Seeds are easily harvested by crushing the flowers after they have thoroughly dried. Soil pH 6.1-7.5. Hardiness zones 9-11. Perennial.

Eating the flower bud results in strong tingly or numbing sensation in the mouth, and excessive saliva production, then cooling sensation in the throat. Buds are known as Buzz Buttons, Szechuan buttons, sansho buttons, electric buttons and toothache cress. Also known as the toothache plant, toothache cress, Australian cress.

Originated in the tropics of Brazil.
