How to grow tomato from seed
Sow indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Once germinated, grow seedlings at 60-70˚F. Pot up to 3-4" pots when first true leaves develop, bury to first leaves. Plant out after last frost. Apply superphosphate 4-12-4 or 5-20-5 for early high yields. Too much nitrogen causes excessive growth and soft fruit. If fruit cracks, back off watering. Indeterminate or climbing varieties should be trellised, fruit ripens over an extended period. Prune to one or two leaders, when plant is not wet, pinch suckers in leaf axles every 7 to 10 days. Thirty days before last frost cut growing leaders to ripen remaining fruit. Determinate or bush varieties do not need pruning or trellising, fruit ripens in a concentrated time period. Soil pH 4.3-6.6. Hardiness zones 4.
Days from maturity calculated from the date of transplant. Average 8,400 seeds per ounce. Federal germination standard: 75%. Usual seed life: 4-10 years. Isolation distance for seed saving: 75-150 feet.
