HOW TO GROW HOREHOUND

Sow in cold frame in spring or fall. Germination is slow and erratic. If no germination in 3–4 weeks, cold stratify for 4–6 weeks. Prick out seedling to pot and plant out once established. Horehound flourishes in poor dry soil. Plant is harvested as it comes into flower, used fresh or dried. If cutback after flowering, to produce a second crop of leaves. Leaves have a musky smell which is lost when dried. Also propagate by division ins spring or fall. Soil pH 6.1-7.8. Hardiness zones 3-9. Perennial.
