Six Point forage chicory is a low growing rosette plant with broad leaves in the winter like dandelion. With warm temperatures in the spring, it rapidly produces large numbers of leaves from the crown. In late spring of the second year, a few flower stems begin to develop from the crown and will reach heights of 6’ if ungrazed. Chicory seed an excellent forage for cattle and deer that withstands heavy grazing. Chicory plants have a deep taproot, is very drought resistant and high in mineral as well as protein content. Six Point breaks winter dormancy earlier, so it has a longer growing season to provide high quality food plot for deer and livestock for the mineral advantages. Graze when 6-8” tall down to 2-3” then allow re-growth. If managed properly a stand with good soil fertility should last 3-5 years. Bred for disease resistance, Six Point is an improved type over Oasis and can be used as the dominate species in a mix with red and white clover or as a minor element of a grass-clover pasture. Six Point chicory is ideally managed in a mix with clovers as the legumes fix nitrogen, add to the nutritive value and provide ground cover during the winter when the chicory is dormant. Clovers are a better companion than grasses as they have a similar growth habit and grazing management requirements to chicory.
