Direct sow seed as soon as it is ripe in the fall. Sow stored seed in early spring in cold frame, or cold moist stratify for 2-4 weeks before starting indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost. Start in potting soil mixtures of sand, loam and peat. Reproduces through rhizomes, will spread through a bed if the soil is a loose mix. Difficult to start from seed, best propagated through division. Seeds require light to germinate, press into soil, do not cover. Soil pH 5.6-7.5. Hardiness zones 5-9. Perennial.
Days from maturity calculated from the date of seeding. Average 21,000 seeds per ounce. There are no Federal germination standards for commercially sold herb seeds. Usual seed life 2–3 years. Seed does not store well, sow fresh seed soon as possible, refrigerate seed. The apomictic seed, does not require pollination and will produce an identical plant to its mother plant. Save your seed, there is no concern for a minimum genetic population or hybridization.
