HOW TO GROW AMERICAN PENNYROYAL
Direct sow after last frost, spring or fall. Prefers mesic to dry conditions, and soil that is rocky or loamy, suitable for xeriscaping. Plants that are grown in sunny locations require more moisture than those growing in shade. Barren or disturbed locations that are largely devoid of ground vegetation are preferred. American Pennyroyal will grow where grass does not. Good to compete with invasive weeds. Habitats include dry upland woodlands, rocky woodlands, areas along woodland trails, rocky glades, receding bodies of water, pastures, and fallow fields. Grow in containers and deadhead to limit spreading. Soil pH 5.6–7.5. Hardiness zones 6-9. Annual.

Native American Lumbee tribe of North Carolina used the herb to treat headaches and dizziness as well as a remedy to purify the blood. They would drink the tea for its expectorant properties which helped in cases of colds and whooping cough. The Chickasaw healers would soak the plant in water and place it on the forehead to relieve itchy and watery eyes. However the most common application of American Pennyroyal was as a remedy for the common cold and flu. Remedies included drinking two cups of the tea while soaking the feet in a hot water bath while wrapped in layers of blankets to stimulate sweat. This would help the fever to break. As one 19th century folk healer wrote: “The hot tea of the plant is a very efficient remedy for all cramps and pains and colic. It is an active sweat producer… good for colds and cramping… I prefer the tea from all the plant over and above all other forms and modes of preparation.”Like its European cousin, Pennyroyal, American Pennyroyal contains pulegone which is used as an abortifacient. This native folk knowledge still persists in modern applications in the Mexican-American community. The herb poleo chino (Hedeoma pulegioides) is recommended as a good remedy for bringing on delayed menstruation. The stems, leaves, and flowers are simmered in an infusion that is sipped three or four times a day over the course of a few days.Pennyroyal is a perennial mint with a variable habit, ranging from low-growing, spreading plants to lanky, upright subshrubs. The plant has a powerful and pungent minty odor. Other names are mock pennyroyal, squaw mint, tickweed, fleabane, stinking balm, mosquito plant, American falsepennyroyal, and American false pennyroyal. Do not use if pregnant.
